Response to intervention (RTI) could sound a little bit complicated, but then this is just an approach anchored on a very simple idea. In the child’s early schooling days, the school can start assessing the student’s skills in math, reading and writing. They can then identify the best targeted teaching interventions to help the students who appear to be struggling to catch up with the rest of the class.A good part of RTI process entails monitoring closely the progress of the students. In this way, the school will be able to see the kids that need to be given more educational support.
Serving as a teacher in a local preschool, I heavily relied on RTI to assist the children who had been proven to have learning difficulties. Prior to undertaking this noble task, I had some knowledge about RTI. I was well aware that this learning intervention process is a multi-tier approach used in the early stages of learning to identify and support students who have learning as well as behavioral needs. A universal screening has to be done for all the students in the classroom to identify the struggling learners so that they are given the intervention to help accelerate their learning rates.I was also cognizant of the fact that RTI is a three-step process, and that the steps are commonly referred to as tiers. The three tiers of RTI include high-quality classroom instruction, screening, and group interventions, targeted interventions and intensive interventions and comprehensive evaluation. Each of these tiers is important and they have to be undertaken with utmost seriousness to ensure to be able to achieve the objectives of the process. And lastly I knew that for successful implementation of RTI, there are some basic components that have to be executed with devotion and in a rigorous way. These components include high-quality, scientifically based classroom instruction, ongoing student assessment, tiered instruction and parent involvement.
But then upon undertaking the process, it dawned on me that I lacked knowledge on certain aspects of RTI. I was not able to categorically state the group of students that really require RTI approach as an intervention process for their learning. It was also not very clear how teachers do track the student progress especially for those under the RTI program. And lastly I could not tell how effective the RTI process can always be. I really wanted to know about these aspects of RTI. To do this, I searched through the various books talking about RTI to know exactly which kind of students needed RTI intervention process. I also discussed with my colleagues at work on the various ways of tracking student progress. I also had to attend a workshop on the learning intervention process to be able to know how effective the RTI approach can always be. I came to learn a lot about RTI as a learning intervention approach.
After searching through various books in the library, I got to learn that RTI is an approach always applied by educatorsto assist students who have been identified to be having learning difficulties. Any teacher can use RTI with any student as long as that is the way to help them succeed. It is not only meant for children with learning disabilities or those with special needs as it always appear to be.
After discussing with my colleagues on this intervention process, I learned that progress monitoring is a very important component of RTI. To track the progress of the students, the schools always assess the child’s skills to be able to know whether or not the intervention is working. This can be done on a weekly basis and each assessment takes just a few minutes. A child may be asked to spell certain words if the learning was on spelling skills. The outcome of each assessment if plotted on a graph so that the RTI team can see whether the child is has progressing well or needs more input.
The workshop also gave me a lot to learn. I came to learn that RTI is one of the most effective learning intervention approaches. When the aforementioned basic components of RTI are diligently implemented the process can yield exceptionally good results and all the children in a classroom will have a level ground to learn.
